Undesirable effects due to the lack of personnel policies

In Human Resources, an organization's personnel policy refers to the framework that governs the treatment, rights, obligations, and type of relationships to be fostered with employees.

The cause of costly errors in human resources, among others, is the lack of definition in formal policies and procedures for handling common and uncommon situations in the workplace, without managing to guide employees on what is appropriate and what is not within the organization.

We suggest that human resources policies should address areas of potential confusion regarding the regulatory framework described above, being consistent and fair, always in line with legal requirements, laws, and government regulations.

At Wiseplan, during our 12 years of experience as human capital management consultants, we have identified a common denominator in the mistakes organizations make when they fail to record, publish, or update these policies.

Although in Chile, beyond internal regulations, the Labor Directorate does not require companies to create a physical manual for their employees, it is highly beneficial for organizations to make details about key areas of regulatory compliance as visible as possible, including fair labor standards, updated laws regarding maternity/paternity leave for employees, working hours, etc.

However, the most effective and sustainable long-term approach for any organization will be to document its policies and procedures in a manual that is shared with every employee.

Beyond internal regulations, the employee handbook should provide rules and guidance on policies that employees face, including changes in legislation and broader external factors that could affect employees' conditions, routine, or performance.

At Wiseplan Chile , we mitigate this risk by supporting Human Resources departments as expert advisors on labor legislation, conducting labor compliance audits, and providing support in labor relations cases so that your organization maintains proper legal, social security, and tax compliance.
